Non-Teaching Area Non-teaching Context Meeting

JALT Publicity Chairs Meeting

Sat, Nov 13, 18:00-19:00 Asia/Tokyo

Location: Room 03

If you are involved with publicity for your JALT chapter or SIG, please consider attending this meeting. We’ll start with a question and discussion session. Ideally, this will involve some short “show and tell” presentations by various people to show the rest of us some part of your group’s publicity. If we have a lot of people, we can do smaller breakout room sessions on different topics.

  • Bill Pellowe

Bill Pellowe is JALT's Director of Public Relations. He is an Associate Professor at Kindai University's campus in Fukuoka Prefecture, where he has been teaching since 2000.

What is a Publicity Chair?

Each of JALT's chapters and SIGs (Special Interest Groups) has one or two publicity chairs. Publicity chairs create social media posts about their group's events, news, and publications. They manage the email newsletter for their group, and work with their membership chair to ensure that new members are added to the mailing list. Some publicity chairs run their group's website, while others don't because their group has a website officer dedicated to that task. Publicity chairs get information about upcoming events from their program chair, and they post the details to the JALT events calendar and other places (such as Facebook, LinkedIn, ELT Calendar, local classifieds, etc.). If their chapter or SIG has a publication, the publicity chair gets information from the publications chair about calls for papers and new publications, and publicizes that.

In many chapters and SIGs, the publicity chair is the head of a team of people who all pitch in to do various tasks. If you'd like to get involved with helping out, please contact your chapter or SIG to volunteer.
