The Business Side of Independent Writing and Publishing

The Materials Writers SIG will host a panel discussion featuring educators who have made the shift into the self-publishing business. The writers have produced numerous textbooks, readers, and manga. The discussion will cover a wide range of topics including: creative benefits, financial risks, logistical challenges, ISBN, printing costs, digital media, marketing, distribution and sales. The panelists will share their self-publication stories. There will be an open Q&A session.

  • John Carle

    John teaches at several universities in the Kansai area. He also runs a publishing company, Oak Hills Press, which partners with independent authors helping to bring their textbooks to market. John is the author of The English Gym and The English Gym II, written under the pen name, Jon Charles. He has recently created The English Gym Digital Workbook on the Zengengo platform.

    John worked at various universities after arriving in Japan in 1997 and presently is associate professor in the Education Department at Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University.

    I'm a long-term university and high school educator in Japan and Canada. A materials writer (mostly textbooks) and also enjoy syllabus design. Interested in various facets of reading, from physiology to the careful construction of reading passages in textbooks. Interested in the ongoing efficacy/relevance of multiculturalism in certain countries.

  • Sean Anderson

    Sean Anderson first came to Japan in 1999. He has taught English at multiple companies, eikaiwa, and private high schools in Kanagawa. A lover of tabletop RPGs, video games, American comics, Japanese manga and anime, and classic literature, Sean has always dreamed of producing a high-quality form of edutainment. After traditionally publishing an English Teaching Card Game, and self-publishing a fan graphic novel based on the popular game Street Fighter, Sean formed a new team and together they now self-publish the popular language learning manga Crystal Hunters
