Spiral Upward: A Framework for Engendering Reflective Output

Pre-recorded Video
Sat, Nov 13, 14:05-14:30 Asia/Tokyo

Location: Room 18

Paul Ricoeur’s “self” expands its self- and world-understanding by 1) encountering the outside or the other, 2) reflecting upon this encounter, and 3) mediating and processing it through the self’s existing identity: spiraling forward. This presentation employs said framework to engender students’ output that reflects their expanded worldview vis-à-vis their lived reality (e.g., hobbies, diet). This three-step process equips them ultimately to reflect upon the insights gained as a result of their encounters.

Short Summary
Paul Ricoeur’s “self” expands its self/world-understanding by (1) encountering the outside/other, (2) reflecting upon this encounter, and (3) mediating/processing it through the self’s existing identity: spiraling forward. This presentation employs this Ricoeurian framework to engender students’ output that reflects upon their expanded worldview vis-à-vis their lived reality (e.g., hobbies, diet, covid-19 difficulties). This three-step process equips them ultimately to reflect upon the insights (i.e., new perspectives, new skills) gained as result of their encounters.

Abstract
For Paul Ricoeur, the self begins with an essential, ideological identity that entails the shared values, personal characteristics, familial relations that integrate us within our immediate social environment and prevent internal war therein. Instead of stagnating at this initial level of ideology-identity, the self progresses and expands its self/world-understanding by (1) encountering the outside/other, (2) reflecting upon that encounter, and (3) mediating/processing it with the existing ideology-identity: spiraling upward as an expanded self. This presentation employs this Ricoeurian self as a theoretical framework for students to generate output that reflects upon their expanded worldview vis-à-vis their lived reality (e.g., hobbies, diet, difficulties of covid-19) and imaginary (hypothetical) encounters about living as their favorite animal or living abroad. This three-step process equips them ultimately to reflect upon the insights (i.e., new perspectives, new skills) gained as result of their encounters.
Criteria and questions for students to express concretely their experiences via sensory language, problem-solving, and comparison will also be presented. Ricoeur’s suggestions for “spiraling” forward/upward via mediation will also be discussed—namely that the conclusions of the encounter should cure the “illnesses” and illuminate the distortions of the existing ideology-identity. Ricoeur portrays such distortive ideologies (e.g., discriminatory practices, stereotypical thinking, ultra-nationalism) as limiting people’s potential and claiming to benefit all while only benefitting a subgroup. Similarly, the encounter should not erase, but should rather nourish and build upon our existing values and self-conceptions to create new ideological starting points, which in turn are to be challenged and critiqued again for continual growth.
