The Evolution of Speech Recognition and English Learning
This presentation covers the IntelliSpeech assessment system developed by EnglishCentral as well as AI-based speech solutions from other providers in the English learning market. It reviews the use of these technologies in read-aloud applications, elicited imitation, sentence building and finally conversational chatbots. The accuracy and efficacy of these systems are discussed as well as the pedagogy that underpins them.
Alan Schwartz began teaching English in China for Princeton-in-Asia and has been in EdTech for two decades, first, working with Sony to build TALKMAN, a mobile language translation game using speech technology, and now with EnglishCentral, the leading online platform for conversational English, with over 2 million users. Alan has a B.A. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Harvard University.
